Access Requirements
Access requirements need to be considered when developing a
preservation strategy. However, access considerations should not be allowed to
put the material at risk.
Placing materials into cool and cold storage requires that
equilibration procedures have to be followed before the material can be
accessed. The time required for this will vary depending on the storage
temperature and the size of the retrieved item or package. In the case of
material which has been frozen, the equilibration process may take up to a
week.
Copying the material either onto polyester or via
digitisation can be a viable method for providing access to material,
particularly if it is in an already deteriorated state. Digitisation has the
additional advantage that the material can be made widely accessible via the
internet. Valuable originals can then be stored at subfreezing temperatures for
long-term preservation.
