B.   Acetate replacement

Key Indicator 6: Replacing acetate microfilm

Replacing unstable acetate microfilm with polyester film is one of the strategies which ANPlan libraries have been using to preserve access to their newspaper collections. In 2013/14 acetate replacement was continued in SLQ with the replacement of 32 reels for six titles. The SLNSW replaced 1,301 reels (eight titles) of acetate onto polyester from the University of New England . No acetate replacement was carried out at the SLWA or the SLV and acetate replacement of first generation microfilm has been completed in NTL, SLNSW and SLSA.

C.    Storage

Key Indicator 7: Storing hard copy newspapers

As reported in previous years, ANPlan libraries are generally able to store the hard copy newspapers for which they hold primary responsibility under ANPlan under environmental conditions which they consider to be optimal, with only two libraries reporting that they are unable to store 100% of their newspapers ideally. See Figure 9 below.

ANPlan libraries report that all first generation microfilm masters are stored in optimal environmental conditions, and the majority of these[1] are stored in the NLA cold store.

The environmental conditions in storage areas vary somewhat across the libraries with reported potential storage temperatures ranging from 13 °C to 25 °C and humidity ranging from 30 to 55 %RH. All data refers to newspapers which libraries hold primary responsibility for under ANPlan—newspapers published in their state/territory. Data for this measure has not changed for the past two years and is reported in more detail in the Table 2 below.

Key Indicator 8: Storing first generation microfilm masters

All ANPlan libraries are able to store all of their first generation newspaper microfilm masters under environmental conditions which they consider to be optimal to preserve permanent access. This has remained unchanged from the previous two years. These reported conditions, which are listed in the Table 3 below, vary between libraries with potential temperatures ranging from 7 °C to 19° C and humidity ranging from 30 to 55 %RH. Seven libraries (NLA, NTL, SLNSW, SLQ, SLSA, SLV and SLWA) store preservation masters in the NLA’s cold store. All data refers to the newspaper titles which libraries hold primary responsibility for under ANPlan.

Key Indicator 9: Control of microfilm masters

Most Australian newspaper microfilm masters are owned by ANPlan libraries. Reporting for this key indicator is the same as last year, except that the SLNSW has now completed the transfer of microfilm masters from the University of New England.

There are still some microfilm masters that are not owned by ANPlan libraries. These include titles from VIC (33), Tasmania (3), WA (1), national (4) and two NT titles[26].

Most ANPlan libraries report that their newspaper microfilm is catalogued on the NBD according to the agreed guidelines.[27]  The NLA reports that all completed digitised newspapers available on Trove are catalogued onto the NBD, according to the current guidelines.[28]
