APAIS thesaurus
Appendix 1
Regions established

The following regions have been established in the APAIS Thesaurus to cover the whole of the world at a general level:

Africa
Antarctica
Asia
Atlantic Ocean region
Central America
East Europe
Europe
Indian Ocean region
Middle East
North America
Pacific Ocean region
South America
Southeast Asia

Some countries may be included in more than one region. For example, Mexico can be regarded as part or either North America or Central America, depending on the point of view of the article being indexed. Because of the amount of material indexed in APAIS, the following countries have been separately established as descriptors:

Australia
Canada
China
East Timor
Fiji
France
Germany
Great Britain
India
Indonesia
Japan
Malaysia
New Zealand
Papua New Guinea
Philippines
Russia
South Africa
Thailand
United States

All other geographic names not in the Thesaurus will appear as identifiers, provided the term has not already appeared elsewhere in the record. For the countries not listed above, the appropriate region is indexed as a descriptor with a cross reference in the References field from the name of the country, e.g.Mexico Use: Central America. The same pattern of descriptors and cross-references is used for Australian towns other than capital cities and suburbs within capital cities, e.g. Cairns Use: Queensland; Bondi Use: Sydney.

See Appendix 2.3 for subdivisions associated with geographic descriptors.
