62. FreeSouth Seas: Voyaging and Cross-Cultural Encounters in the Pacific (1760-1800)

National Library of Australia: South Seas is an online information resource for the history of European voyaging and cross-cultural encounters in the Pacific between 1760 and 1800. South Seas offers the full text of the holograph manuscript of James Cook's Endeavour Journal. (The National Library of Australia holds the original holograph 'Journal of the HMS Endeavour' in the Manuscripts Collection. This work has been digitised and can be viewed in its entirety at this URL http://nla.gov.au/nla.ms-ms1) The South Seas website also includes the full texts of the journals kept by Joseph Banks and Sydney Parkinson on the voyage. Also included is the text of John Hawkesworth's 'Account of the Voyages undertaken ... in the Southern Hemisphere' (1773).

Brightsolid in partnership with British Library: The British Newspaper Archive contains news articles, family notices, letters to the editor, obituaries and advertisements from historical newspapers published in the UK. The British Library is working in partnership with brightsolid online publishing over the next 10 years to digitise up to 40 million newspaper pages from the British Library's vast collection. The first stage of this project focuses on newspaper runs published before 1900 and will include titles from cities such as Birmingham, Derby, Manchester, Nottingham, Norwich, Leeds and York, along with county newspapers and local titles from London boroughs. Thomson Gale: The Making of the Modern World : The Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature (Part 1: 1450-1850 and Part II: 1851-1914) is the most comprehensive collection in existence for the study of early economic, political, business, and social history, and for researching the literature of economics from this period. The Making of the Modern World digital collection presents more than 62,400 titles from the period 1450-1914. It focuses on economics interpreted in the widest sense, including political science, history, sociology, and special collections on banking, finance, transportation and manufacturing. Available for document delivery to Ausralian libraries.

State Library of South Australia: This index contains many thousands of references to South Australian newspaper and magazine stories for the years 1837 to 1937. It also includes extensive selected text from the indexed publications, other primary and secondary sources and numerous extracts from Mr Manning's own writings. Notable publications (selectively) indexed include Adelaide Times, Advertiser, Chronicle, The Critic, Express & Telegraph, Frearson's Weekly, The Herald, Illustrated Adelaide Post, The Irish Harp, The Lantern, The Mail, The News, Observer, Register, SA Gazette & Mining Journal, and Southern Australian. The index is divided into the four folders: South Australia - includes coverage of a number of state level topics; Adelaide - includes a number of topics which predominately relate to the city and the metropolitan area as a whole; Port Adelaide; and Place Names of South Australia - an alphabetical list of South Australian place names (including suburbs of Adelaide). Biographical references are generally located on pages dealing with the place or activity with which a person is most associated. For example, several references to aviator Jimmy Melrose can be found in the entry for Melrose Park. Many Place Name pages have a list of obituaries of notable residents - generally at the bottom of the page or part of page dealing with the place.

Gale Group: Commenced in 1822, providing analysis and commentary on the weeks news and society at large. Early issues contained colourful information on murders, mysteries, theatre, sport and politics. Despite similarities in name, it was an entirely separate paper from The Times until 1967 when they came under common ownership of Times Newspapers Ltd. Today it remains editorially independent from The Times with its own remit and perspective on events. The National Library also provides access to The Times Digital Archive 1785-2007. Available for document delivery to Australian libraries.

69. Free1891 Women's Suffrage Petition

Public Record Office Victoria: In 1891 members from the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Victorian Temperance Alliance and other women's suffrage groups worked together to collect signatures from women throughout Victoria requesting the right to vote for women in the colony. Nearly 30,000 signatures were recorded. The petition has now been digitised and indexed and has a facility for members of the public to add life details for the contributors.

Mura Gadi is an online guide to significant manuscripts, pictures and oral histories in the National Library of Australia relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples prior to 2003. Although it does not list the many books, periodicals and other publications in the Library relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, these materials can be found using the Library's online catalogue at http://www.nla.gov.au/catalogue/
