ACT Environment and Planning Directorate - Planning: The ACT Environment and Planning Directorate - Planning is responsible for the naming of public places in the ACT (nomenclature). Public places include districts, divisions (suburbs), streets, parks and geographical features. Geographical Names Board of NSW: This book was compiled in 1954 by a Lands Officer, the late Ernest C. Gleeson, and it alphabetically lists all the place names in the NSW Eastern and Central Division Parish Maps at that time. There are an estimated 22,500 name entries in this list (some of which no longer exist). Information includes place name, county, parish, land district, pastures protection district and local government authority.
Search the Geographical Names Register (GNR) of NSW. Searches are possible by placename, status, designation, LGA, topographic map, and parish.
National gazetteer for Australia and offshore territories. Search over 300,000 geographical names for location and spelling as well as links to Geoscience Australia mapping products. Also provides sheet number and name for the 1:100,000 map series. The Gazetteer of Australia is compiled by Geoscience Australia and is part of the Geoscience Australia website.
Government of Western Australia: Provides information on the GEONAMA data set which is unavailable online. Contact details listed. Links to "History of country town names" and "History of metropolitan suburb names" provide a summary of origins of names.
Department of Primary Industries and Water, State Government of Tasmania: Provides details on the Board's establishment, functions, and responsibilities. Information on the data set of Tasmanian place names. Individual names can be researched by contacting the Board secretary. Contact details provided.
Northern Territory Department of Planning and Infrastructure: Search for names registered under the Place Names Act as well as names appearing on current and historical maps and in historical publications. Can search using either a simple or advanced search. The Register is continually being updated and new place names being added.
State Library of South Australia: Listing of place names of South Australia, compiled by Geoffrey Manning. There is also a print book of the same name held in the Main Reading Room Reference Collection at the National Library at RF GAZ SA 2006.
Government of South Australia: PlaceNames Online provides a simple search tool for obtaining useful information from the State Gazetteer. The purpose of the State Gazetteer is to provide an accurate and definitive listing of place names for mapping, emergency services and general enquiry purposes. Associated with each name is up to 38 fields of information relating to feature type, classification, location, derivation and cross-reference to current, previous and alternative names.
