Argus Index Project History Program, La Trobe University: This website is an index to the Argus for the years 1870-1879. The Argus was a major Australian metropolitan daily published in Melbourne from 1848 to 1957, and a primary national resource for data on 19th century Australia. The index covers Victorian news and news from other colonies which relates to Victoria; national news and issues; editorials; letters to the editor; theatre and book reviews; literary contributions; feature articles relating to Victoria or Australia; biographies and obituaries; and court cases. The site does NOT provide online access to the full text of the paper. A separate page outlines ways of getting copies of articles found through the index. The Argus newspaper (1848-1957) is available on microfilm at mfm NX 124 in the Newspapers and Microforms Reading Room.

Index of Victorian newspapers which is constantly growing and covers almost every item published in a particular edition of a newspaper. Including advertisements, shipping lists, market reports, court reports and all general commentary. Index covers various editions from the 1840's through to the 1920's and will be continually expanded.
