National Archives of AustraliaNational Archives of Australia: The records in the collection of the National Archives of Australia trace the events and decisions that shaped the nation. Papers of Governors-General, Prime Ministers and Ministers are held as well as Cabinet documents, Royal Commission files and departmental records on defence, immigration, security and intelligence, naturalisation, and many other issues involving the federal government. The main focus is on records created since the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. There are also some nineteenth-century records relating to functions that were transferred by the colonies to the Commonwealth government, including shipping and post offices. Most records in the collection are files, but there are also significant holdings of photographs, posters, maps, architectural drawings, films, playscripts, musical scores and sound recordings.
National Film and Sound ArchiveNational Film and Sound Archive: The National Film and Sound Archive, previously known as ScreenSound Australia, is one of Australia's premier cultural institutions, dedicated to the collection, preservation and sharing of Australia's screen and sound heritage. National Register of Archives (Great Britain)Great Britain: Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts: The National Register of Archives (NRA) was set up by the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts in 1945 to collect and disseminate information about manuscript sources for British history outside the public records. The NRA consists of more than 43,000 unpublished lists and catalogues of major manuscript collections, and approximately 150,000 further lists of miscellaneous and minor collections. They describe the holdings of local record offices, national and university libraries, specialist repositories, museums and other bodies in the United Kingdom and aborad. They also cover papers held privately by individuals, firms and institutions, and in such cases the Commission is often able to provide further information about the accessibility of the papers for research. The lists vary in length and detail, and are only available in the Commission's public searchroom. The indexes, however, are available on the Web.
