Eighteenth Century Journals I & II : Newspapers and Periodicals 1685 - 1815Adam Matthews: Eighteenth Century Journals I contains material from the Hope Collection at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, one of the finest surviving collections of eighteenth-century periodicals. In this resource we have drawn together 95 rare journals printed between 1693 and 1799, combining major publications with more ephemeral works to underline the broad variety of eighteenth century print journalism. Eighteenth Century Journals II provides a searchable, full text database of 18th Century newspapers and periodicals drawn from the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas, which holds one of the finest collections of 17th and 18th century newspapers and periodicals in the world. This collection represents both major metropolitan (London) papers, but also provincial newspapers such as Northampton Mercury, York Courant and York Chronicle. Scottish and Irish interests are represented along with English, by the Edinburgh Gazette and the Tatler (Edinburgh); and the Dublin Journal and Dublin Evening Post. Of particular value to historians is the inclusion of short runs of low cost newspapers which rarely survive, such as Parker's Penny Post for 1732-3. The collection also includes a valuable range of literary and literary-related publications which contained essays, criticism and comment. Some sample titles in the collection include: Connoisseur, the History of the Works of the Learned, the Museum; Or, the Literary and Historical Register, and the Present State of the Republick of Letters, the Bee; Or, Literary Weekly Intelligence, the British Magazine for 1760-1, the Vocal Magazine for 1778, and the New London Magazine for 1788, 1789 and 1792. The titles chosen from HRC for this project have been screened carefully against EEBO and ECCO so that there is no duplication whatsoever with these projects, although the material available in those collections form a useful adjunct to Eighteenth Century Journals II, as does the Times Digital Archive 1785-1985 and Early American Newspapers. Series I, 1690-1876. All of these additional resources are also available at the National Library via E-Resources.
