| Summary: |
One score card printed on beige silk recording the first win against England by an Australian touring side and Spofforth's 14 wickets. Includes the first and second innings of each member of both teams. Australia won the only Test match of the tour by 7 runs scoring 63 and 122 to England's 101 and 77. England had seemed likely to win after making 51 for the loss of only 2 wickets. In the final innings the most legendary collapse in cricket history followed with England's batsmen unable to get the ball past the fieldsmen. The Ashes legend was born when the Sporting Times published this obituary the following day: "In affectionate remembrance of English cricket which died at the Oval on 29th August 1882. Deeply lamented by a large circle of sorrowing friends and acquaintances, R.I.P. N.B.: The Body will be cremated and The Ashes taken to Australia." |
