| Notes: |
An early map of the East Indian Archipelago, heavily annotated with placenames and explanatory text, showing the vitally important Spice Islands and covering an area from Sumatra and Southeast Asia in the west to Nova Guinea [i.e. New Guinea] in the east. Much of the geographical data for this map is based on the portalans of the Portuguese cartographer, Bartolomeu Lasso, from earlier in the 1500s but updated from his own knowledge of other European explorers in this region. At bottom left corner of map Hondius inscribes "Huc Franciscus Dra. appulit" on the southern port of Java where Francis Drake landed. Decorative features include a sea battle, a sea monster, two compass roses and three decorated cartouches. Relief is shown pictorially.
Cartouche title.
