General correspondence, 1903-1910
Letters of a political nature that Deakin received as Prime Minister and drafts of a number of the replies, together with all the letters he received dealing with general governmental activities. Many are congratulatory messages following Deakin's three elections as Prime Minister, while others concern issues surrounding the 1906 and 1910 elections, the New Hebrides, women's suffrage, marriage laws, meteorology and rainmaking, British land ownership in Australia, various government commissions and the Imperial Conferences on merchant shipping (1907), defence (1909) and the press (1909). Among the correspondents are many of the important figures in Federal and State politics at the time, British and Empire politicians, newspapermen, members of the legal profession, academics, businessmen, Agents-General and other civil servants, political organisers and feminists.
