The Claasz Collection comprising more than 200 printed works as well as maps and manuscripts, was presented to the National Library by Mr Manfred Claasz, a Ceylonese who migrated to Australia in 1972. The emphasis of the collection is on tea growing and management in Sri Lanka. There are also works on Sri Lankan history, geography, politics and culture.
Among the manuscripts is a collection of notes and articles on tea, and field notebooks kept by Mr Claasz himself. There is also an ola (palm leaf) manuscript, which is the subject of an article in National Library of Australia News, 6(7), April 1996, pp 6-8.The collection of maps consists of topographical maps of Sri Lanka, some showing the principal tea estates and tea planting areas, prepared by the Surveyor-General's Department.
