Australia-Korea Research and Information Profile

Cliff Law explained that the Australia-Korea Foundation was able to offer $1,000 for the profile compared with the $8,500 which had been sought from them for preparation of the survey.

Dr Wells confirmed that based on his latest contacts with the Korea Foundation, the result of the application for funding from that body was expected in December.

In view of the uncertainty over funding, there was discussion of options for the profile. The option of declining the AKF funds and not proceeding with the survey was rejected. Other options included a mail out only, mail out plus visits by a surveyor, or a more comprehensive survey. The profile could include research and business needs or be limited to research.

After discussion it was decided that rather than trying to decide on the exact scope of the profile now, the best option was to identify by early December a suitable person to carry out the survey. It should also be possible to establish what costs might be incurred, such as per diem costs. By then it should be known whether Korea Foundation funds were available. ANU,Griffith, Monash and the National Library were prepared to provide support in kind. The Korean Studies Association of Australasia (KSAA) was seen as an appropriate body to identify a suitable person, and Professor Lee and Dr Wells undertook to communicate with Dr Duk-Soo Park, President of KSAA and to advise on how the KSAA will proceed. The Guide to Korean Studies in Australia, recently produced by the National Korean Studies Centre, was seen as a useful base document for the profile.

Korean MARC records and the CJK System.

Marie Sexton reported that the National Central Library in Korea had indicated its willingness to provide KORMARC records for the Australian National CJK System. This would greatly enhance the Korean component of the CJK System. It was reported that Sydney and Monash have now joined the National Library in adding Korean records to the CJK System.

Guide to Korean Studies in Australia

The National Library would seek additional copies of the guide and look at the possibility of having a version included on the World Wide Web, if one had not already been created.

Next Teleconference

The next teleconference would be held on Thursday 5 December at 11.30 am. Dr Park, President of the KSAA, and Ms Lesley Smith, Manager, National Korean Studies Centre would be approached to join the teleconference.
