New English books on Japan

From October 2009 we began issuing another acquisitions list for English books on Japan. This supplements our listing of books on Japan written in Japanese. Browse through them here.

2009-2010 Japan Study Grants awarded

The Japan Study Grants Advisory Committee met in November 2009 and approved five grants. The Japan Study Grants fund travel and living costs in Canberra for four weeks to use the National Library's Japanese collections. The successful applicants will take up their grants between November 2009 and April 2010. They are:

Dr Masako Gavin, Brisbane, studying 'The Life and thoughts of Ienaga Toyokichi: Bridging over the Pacific'

Ms Akiko Tomatsuri, Sydney, with 'A study of Western influence on Japan: the reception of ancient Greek drama in post-war Japan'

Mr Heinz-Erik Ropers, Melbourne, studying 'Contested histories and memories of wartime sexual slavery and forced labour'

Dr Amy Reigle (Ainsworth) Newland, Adelaide studying 'Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) – Artistic Innovator, Traditionalist, or Artist of his Times'

Dr Thomas Wilkins and Dr Minako Ichikawa-Smart, Sydney with the topic 'Securing Japan-Australia relations'
