Burmese CollectionSee also: Find Burmese Material Burma (now officially known as Myanmar) is generally regarded as part of Southeast Asia, but prior to independence was linked to British India. Thus for example the censuses were included with the Indian census, and the Library has a full set of these, set out in detail in Burmester's Guide to the Collections. For Burma in the colonial period the censuses for 1872 to 1931 are held. Official publications from the British and early independence periods held by the Library include : Burma gazette 1875-1925 on microfilm and 1957-1967 hard copy; the Catalogue of books 1957-1963 published by the Ministry of National Planning; the Burma law reports 1946-1956. The Library also has the Burma acts for the years 1920 and 1955,1956,1960. Microform resources relating to Burma include Gazetteers of India in the British Period (mp 2084, 2109); U.S.Dept of State. Records of the Department of State Relating to India and Burma, 1910-1929 (mfm G 8999-9024, 9079, 9080); and Butler, Sir Spencer Harcourt. Papers 1881-1926 (mfm G 21344-21363). Butler was Governor of Burma 1923-1927. The Library holds a number of works relating to Burma during the Second World War and the Japanese Occupation, including diaries of Australian Prisoners-of-War; and Japanese language sources. In 1980 the Library acquired the collection of Professor Gordon Hannington Luce (1889-1979),widely regarded as the formost European scholar on Burma. This major collection of monographs, serials, manuscripts, maps and photographs on many aspects of Burmese studies and the countries neighbouring Burma is described in Burma and Beyond , originally published in National Library of Australia News, 6(13) October 1996, pp.3-5. In recent years the supply of Burmese publications has been intermittent. Some materials, mostly Burmese language monographs, were received on exchange from the Universities Central Library in Rangoon. The Library is also continuing to collect Western language works about Burma published in other countries, including items published in Australia, and received on legal deposit. Burmese language newspapers are available for use in the Newspaper and Microform Reading Room located on the Lower Ground Floor (LG1) of the National Library.
