Thai CollectionSee also: Find Thai Materials The Thai collection consists of some 36,440 volumes of monographs, 1,400 serial titles and 60 newspaper titles, including some on microfilms. This is considered to be the largest collection of materials in the Thai language in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere. The collection covers all subject areas, and is especially strong in the fields of humanities and social sciences. There is an extensive collection of Thai cremation volumes. These are memorial biographical works published to mark a notable person's death. The collection holds three sets of Tripitaka, the major Buddhist writings, in different versions. One of these was a gift from His Majesty, King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. The Thai materials are acquired by purchase and through exchange programs with contacts in Thailand. The major exchange partner is the National Library of Thailand, along with some other government departments and institutions, and other various donors in Thailand. The National Library has also established an Acquisition Program within the Australian Embassy to assist acquisition of further publications in Thailand. You can also read about the history of the Library's Thai collection in Thai Treasure Trove, a paper by Rosemary Borthwick that was published in the National Library of Australia News. |
