Irina Baronova Gallery
Irina Baronova, the last of the "baby ballerinas" who became overnight stars during the 1932-3 season of Col. De Basil's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo lives up to her reputation as one of the most expressive and communicative dancers of the 20th century. She became a celebrity all over again when her autobiography, Irina: Ballet, life and love, and the runaway cult movie, Ballet Russe, were released in 2005. At the age of 88, this natural and gifted racounteuse mesmerised a capacity audience at the National Library of Australia's theatre in February, speaking with Curator of Dance, Lee Christofis, about her tumultuous private life and phenomenal career. The audience hung on every word of her stories told with dramatic intensity, as convincing as any ballet, and captured so vividly in Paul Livingston's photographs.
