Australian Newspaper Digitisation Program breaks through 20 Millionth article milestone
15 June 2010
An article from The Mercury (Tasmania), published on the 5th of February 1949 is the 20 millionth article made available to the public as part of the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program. The article is a report from the trial of Cardinal Mindszenty (the then Primate of Hungary), and outlines his request to the United States to provide him with a means of escape from trial. The article is a continuation of a front page article, which includes headlines such as “Union Chief’s Bitter Attack on Red Activity” and “States Agree on Rigid Price Control”. This is a major milestone and marks the half-way point to the 40 million articles (from over 4 million newspaper pages) that the National Library is digitising and making freely available to the public as part of the Australian Newspaper Digitisation Program, due for completion in July 2011. The article mentioned above is available here.
