FAQs – they may answer more enquiries than you think!
How can I find unclaimed money?
12 July 2010
Many of our repeatedly asked enquiries are published on our website as FAQs. These range from library services type questions, how to questions, to more in depth but frequently asked reference enquiries. Clients visiting the Ask a librarian webpage are asked if they have first checked our FAQs before submitting their enquiry. However, we still often receive enquiries which can be answered by an existing FAQ. Here’s one example of an enquiry, recently received via our Ask a Librarian service, for which there is an existing FAQ. Q: I have an investment record book from the NSW Permanent Building Society Limited. The book to my knowledge has not been closed and dates back to 1971. How can I find out if the account still exists? A: The Library has published an FAQ How can I find unclaimed money? which provides a list of resources you can use for tracking down your lost Building Society account. If the NSW Permanent Building Society is no longer in existence then any unclaimed money held in accounts will have been transferred either to the Commonwealth or relevant State government. Pre-1992 building society and credit union accounts were usually sent to the relevant state agency. In this instance this would be the NSW Office of State Revenue .
