Looking for old cartoons?
a couple of burly life savers standing in what resembled a doorway

Continuing on with our selection of reference enquiries…we’re not always able to provide the answer to a client – in which case we do try to suggest other avenues of research, though sometimes these are unavoidably arduous options. Q: I’m seeking a copy of a WEG cartoon that was done for the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club around 1963-1965. We are writing a history of the club and would like to include the cartoon. Naturally it was in black & white, a couple of burly life savers standing in what resembled a doorway with a caption. A: The Library has a collection of WEG cartoons which have been digitised and are available online. The cartoons date from 1970 to 1990. Unfortunately, this does not fit your time frame and I was unable to find the cartoon you refer to. To view all the cartoons in the Library’s collection, click on the link “see records in this collection” which is found near the bottom of the catalogue record provided above. I also checked several cartoon compilation books but was unable to locate the cartoon. The books I checked were:
- Weg’s world : 35 years of cartoon from the Herald
- Dr. Whitlam's deservedly famous Gough syrup
- No Holts barred
- Gortn the ACT
WEG drew cartoons for The Herald (Melbourne) so you may wish to consider searching this newspaper for the cartoon. Unfortunately, there is no index to The Herald. You can search Trove to find which libraries in Victoria hold The Herald for the years 1963-1965.
