About the Pictures CatalogueSee About the Pictures for information about the images used on the Pictures Catalogue home page. Scope of this catalogueThis catalogue contains descriptions of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and three-dimensional objects held in the Pictures Collection of the National Library of Australia. The emphasis is on Australian material, with some material relating to New Zealand, Antarctica, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific. The main time period covered is late eighteenth century to the present day. The Collection includes thousands of portraits of significant Australians. The Pictures Collection contains approximately 45,000 paintings and over 600,000 photographs; most of this material has been catalogued with individual descriptions or collection summaries. All these descriptions and summaries can be searched on this database. Of the material that has been catalogued, more than 80,000 items have been digitised. These images are available through this catalogue, for research and study purposes and publication. More online images are added regularly. This version of the Pictures Catalogue includes the pictures formerly available through the Images 1 service. Images Currently Available in the Pictures CatalogueOriginal works
Photographs
All original works of art and many of the photographs included in the Pictures Catalogue have complete bibliographic entries, including subject headings. Some of the photographs have been catalogued as collections and will be catalogued individually in the future. The Pictures Catalogue offers a number of search options to enhance access to the images including searching by the creator (photographer or artist); other names associated with a work or collection; title; subject; and the 'nla.pic' number in the database. Further information on the Pictures Collection is available. Digitised images that are in CopyrightEvery effort has been made to contact copyright holders. When copyright status is uncertain or copyright holders unknown, works have sometimes been included. If a work in copyright has been inadvertently included and the copyright holder prefers that the work not be made available, the record will be removed. Please see the Copyright and Reproduction section for more information. Parts of pictures that are not digitisedWhen we digitise a picture we do not usually include:
We do however, make an exception where a border or supporting medium has significant decoration, such as scroll work, or significant information such as a signature, title, or studio name. In deciding what to include or exclude around the edge of a picture, our digitisation staff use some judgement, taking into account the significance of any decoration, inscription etc, and the width of the border. If you are interested in any possible marginal annotations, marks, inscriptions on the back of pictures, etc., please first check the catalogue record, by following the More Information link. If there is not enough information in the catalogue record, please contact us; Pictures staff will be happy to inspect the item for you and provide any further information you need, including a transcription of any writing on the back. Nearly all items in the Pictures collection may be inspected on request in the Pictures Reading Room. If you have further information...If you have information about an item in the Pictures Collection that you think may be of interest to researchers, please send us the information. Contact details are available on the Contact Us page. We will keep the information on file and make it available to researchers on request, and we will also amend our catalogue record if appropriate. Technical InformationThe digital images have been created though two main methods:
The master images have been stored in tiff format; some older images have been copied from videodisk. With the exception of the images copied from Videodisk, the master images are high resolution. Currently, images are being digitised at a minimum of 300 dots per inch (dpi), with higher resolutions for some material. Where copyright permits, copies of these high resolution masters may be ordered. The images displayed online are medium resolution and are in jpeg format.
