Frequently Asked Questions
What if the small images display only as icons? If you could see the pictures on the Pictures Catalogue home page and on other web pages, try refreshing the screen (in Internet Explorer use the Refresh button on the menu bar; in Netscape use the Reload button on the menu bar) If you are unable to see any pictures, check that you have set up your browser to display pictures. (In Netscape, use the Edit Preferences option and check that the "Automatically load images" option is switched on. In Internet Explorer, select Internet Options from the Tools menu, then Advanced, then make sure Show pictures is checked) This problem may also occur if you are using Internet Explorer versions 5 to 5.5. To fix the problem, you can download and install the latest Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack or the latest version of the Internet Explorer browser from the Microsoft website If the images still do not display, or you can see some images, but not others, Contact Us. Why did my search (or browse) take so long?Occasionally, a process will take much longer than usual to complete due to competing demands on the server. If this happens, enter the query again. You should find that performance has returned to normal. If not please Contact Us as this may be evidence of a more serious problem with the server. Why doesn't every entry have a picture? Some entries don't have pictures because they describe an item in the Library's Pictures Collection that has not yet been digitised. We are digitising over 5,000 Pictures items each year but still have half a million to do. Some other entries don't have pictures in cases where a single entry describes a group of items. To see if any items in the group have been digitised, please display the brief entry, and then, if the title is a link eg Scenes of travel and adventure in Western Australia follow the link. Why won't the order form display? If you have more than one browser window open on your PC (e.g. if you have already ordered a picture but did not close the window) the order form will open in that window but it will not automatically appear on your screen. To view the other window, either use the ALT & TAB keys to find it, or select it from the status bar at the bottom of the screen. Why did only one picture, or just a few pictures, display when I clicked on 57 photographs? We have not yet digitised all the pictures in the group. We probably selected only one or a few pictures from the group because those pictures were required for an exhibition or to fill a customer order. Where can I see the pictures used for the design of the Pictures Catalogue home page?Follow this link: About the pictures How can I print the picture so it fits on the page?If you have tried to print a picture and it is too wide for the page, you may need to print it in'Landscape' mode. To do this, select File then Print from the browser menu at the top of the screen, then choose Properties. Select the Landscape option by checking the radio button. How can I save this picture for personal use?To save a picture to a folder on your computer, select (click) the picture so it displays on a separate screen. Position the cursor over the picture and use the righthand mouse button to activate the popup menu. Select "Save picture as" or "Save image as" then select a folder on your computer and Save. If the "Save picture" box shows the "Filename: untitled" and "Save as type: BITMAP", press Cancel, then use the browser Refresh button to refresh the screen, and try again. The Filename should look something like this: nla.pic-an000002257255-v and the type: JPEG. Please note that you may only save pictures in this way for for private research. If you wish to use the pictures for any other purposes, you must complete the Request for permission form. How do you choose the pictures that are in this catalogue? We choose pictures for the Pictures Collection that document important aspects of Australian society and history, including portraits of significant Australians. For more details please see the Pictures Collection Development Policy. From the over 600,000 pictures in the Pictures Collection, we consider many factors when choosing which ones to digitise including copyright restrictions, likely demand, and fragility of the original. Can I order an image that has not yet been digitised?Yes. The simplest way to do this is to display the item, then follow the 'Order' link to an online order form. Fill in the form and select 'submit'. We will be able to fill your order in about 2-3 weeks. What is the fastest way I can get a publication-quality image?Select an image that is already digitised, and submit your order electronically, rather than mailing it and enclose the payment at the priority rate. This rate is three times the normal rate (eg 3 x $35= $105). If there are no copyright problems, the image will be sent to you within 3 days of our receipt of your order. How do I know if there are going to be any copyright problems?Generally, if a photograph has a date before 1950, or a painting or drawing a date before 1890, there are unlikely to be any problems with permissions or copyright. If in doubt please Contact Us. You can send in an order even if you are unsure of the copyright status of the image you are ordering; Pictures staff will let you know if you need to seek further copyright information. Please see our Permissions and Copyright page for more information. Go to Pictures Catalogue Help |
