Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia
Sir John Alexander Ferguson (1881-1969) began preparing his Bibliography of Australia in the 1930s, having devoted many years of his life to book collection and bibliography. The bibliography was published in seven volumes by Angus & Robertson over a period of twenty-eight years, 1941-1969 and is considered the standard reference source for printed material relating to Australia appearing between 1784 and 1900.
The National Library contributed to the compilation of the bibliography from the late 1930s and after Sir John Ferguson's death in 1969, continued working on the addenda in co-operation with Mr Eric Russell (Angus & Robertson) and the State Library of New South Wales. The Addenda 1784-1850, Volumes I to IV was published by the National Library in 1986. The Library has held the copyright for the work since 1975.
The Retrospective National Bibliography of Australia (RNB) for the period 1901-1950 was intended to fill the gap between Ferguson's bibliography and current Australian National Bibliography (ANB) which began in the 1970s.
Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia is a key to the treasures of the National Library's Ferguson Collection and the foundation of the Australian Cooperative Digitisation Project, 1840-45.
