History of the CollectionsThe National Library of Australia began as the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library in 1901 and during the early period of its history the foundations were laid for the diverse range of collections held by the Library today. A History of the National Library collections [to 1980] was prepared by C. A. Burmester, formerly Assistant National Librarian, in 1981.
