Our newspaper collection consists of about 8,000 titles, though many of these are no longer being published. There are over 400 current Australian titles and more than 250 current overseas titles.

Newspapers are available in a variety of formats:

  • Paper
  • Microform
  • Electronic

Australian newspapers

The Library collects and preserves the capital city dailies, major regional city newspapers, a range of other country town newspapers, newspapers published by ethnic groups and political organisations, and newspapers representing special interests.

Overseas newspapers

The Library has a large collection of English language newspapers, with a selection of foreign language titles. A full list of the overseas newspaper titles collected by the Library is available.

For newspapers in Asian scripts, the latest two months are available through the Asian Collections Reading Room. Previous issues are generally available through the Newspapers and Microforms Reading Room. Please check the catalogue.

There are also specialist subject collections relating to particular time periods, including Early American newspapers, Early English newspapers, Irish political and radical newspapers and Ireland: Politics and Society through the Press, 1760-1922 held on microfilm.
