There are more than 1,300 titles in over 2,500 volumes in this collection, many of them 18th Century and the remainder mostly early 19th Century. They fall into three groups: French literature in general; French plays (mostly of the early 19th Century); and political and social history of France. Within these groups there is a wide variety of major and minor authors. Writings include both scholarly works and the essays, memoirs, plays, confessions and didactic and satirical writings which were then popular. Many of the plays held are still performed in France.
Items published before 1801 are shelved within the Rare Book Collection; the remainder form part of the Library's General Collection.
