Formed Collection

Victorian Minor Verse

A collection of Victorian poetry published in the nineteenth century was purchased by the Library from an English dealer. The collection of some 500 volumes is strong in the ordinary, lesser known poetry read and enjoyed by the literate population of the time. It includes some rather unusual anthologies such as Oxford prize poems: being a collection of such English poems as have at various times obtained prizes in the University of Oxford, 1826; Verses by the way, by John Page Hopps, 1865; and The Lady of La Garaye by Mrs Norton, Cambridge, 1863.

The greater part of the collection, however, consists of volumes by individual authors such as David Gray, Robert Buchanan, John Keble, Andrew Lang, H. Cholmondeley Pennell, Thomas Moore, Henry Newbolt, Henry Taylor and Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.
