Guide to the Australian Antarctic Division Collection - miscellaneous research notes, photographs and survey material
Introduction
The Australian Antarctic Division Collection consists of two major components:
- Aerial photography, and
- Miscellaneous research notes, personal papers, photographs and survey materials.
This finding aid lists the material in the miscellaneous material.
Summary
Creator: Australian Antarctic Division
Title: Australian Antarctic Division Collection, Miscellaneous Research Notes, Photographs and Survey Material
Date range: 1910-1986
Extent: 10.9 m (53 boxes comprising manuscript boxes, folio boxes, archive boxes and original boxes) of miscellaneous material
Administrative Information
Access
Available for reference. Not for loan.
Provenance
This collection was acquired from AUSLIG (Australian Surveying and Land Information Group) (now Geoscience Australia) in February 1998, three years after the National Library agreed to house the SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research) Special Map Collection. Both were originally compiled by the Australian Antarctic Division but later transferred to AUSLIG.
Scope and Content
NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) ERTS (Earth Resources Technology Satellite) imagery taken in 1972 – 1974. These images are of the Australian Antarctic Territory.
There are ground photographs of varying sizes taken of persons and activities associated with the Australian Antarctic stations, landscapes, geography and survey trips; a series of photographs of landscapes and life on the French Kerguelen Island; a small set of flight diagrams relating to some 1970 aerial photographic runs; ANARE reports, including a ‘dog report’; surveying computational notebooks; two personal diaries; Department of National Mapping files; Russian and other technical reports, and material from the USA Highjump project.
In addition, there is some material from the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1910 – 1913; material from Mawson’s AAE 1912 expedition to the Antarctic and Macquarie Island; and photographs of Heard Island.
Arrangement
Where possible the original order of the collection has been retained as much as is practicable. The original titles on groups of material have been retained if the material has needed to be transferred to an archival folder and the date range of material in the boxes recorded on a spreadsheet. Some of the material is grouped in ring binders, folders or archival bags within the various folio boxes, manuscript boxes and archive boxes.
The material includes four photographic albums containing colour and black and white negatives of various CAS (Commonwealth Aerial Survey) photographic runs. The negatives have been removed from the original albums and placed in negative preserver sheets in 4 ring binders. The pages of each binder are labelled in a way that allows identification of each CAS negative set.
Note: Material in some of the boxes refers to surveying terminology NM/S (number) or NMA/S (number) used to identify a specific survey point. These are abbreviations: NM is National Mapping, S is the national mapping designator for Anatarcica and A means the point has been located using an astro sighting.
