Arthur Groom collection

Project Brief | Cataloguing guidelines

The Arthur Groom collection consists of 123 black and white photographs presently housed in two albums. Within the collection there are four main topics. As there are quite a lot of subject headings for the collection and subjects are varied for each of the four topics, there is a template for each topic.

1. Central Australia, 1946-1947, photographs for the book I saw a strange land. (16 photographs) (Template 23097410)

2. Northern Territory and Western Australia, 1952, for the book Wealth in the wilderness. (82 photographs) (Template 23113019)

3. Binna Burra, Queensland, 1930-1950s. (21 photographs) (Template 23112678)

4. Noosa, Queensland, ca. 1950. (4 photographs) (Template 23112627)

008 Coding

For a lot of the photos the exact date (year) is uncertain and the date is given within a range of years. In line 6 use whichever term is appropriate: Known or probable single date; Uncertain dates.

e.g.

Known or probable single date (e.g. date on item is 1952)
7-10 1952
11-14 Blank

6 Uncertain dates (e.g. date on item is 1930?)
7-10 193u
11-14 Blank

6 Uncertain dates (e.g. date on item is a range 1930s-1950s)
7-10 193u
11-14 195u

If the range of dates is 1930s-1950s and you can work out from the photo that it is the 1940s then use 194u in field 7-10. Sometimes you can get a good idea of dates from car models, clothes worn, etc

100 Main entry

Arthur Groom was the photographer for all photographs so leave Main entry as is.
$aGroom, Arthur,$d1904-1953.

245 Title

$aTitle

Source of title:

For photographs relating to I saw a strange land and Wealth in the wilderness , refer to the caption attached to the photograph either on a piece of paper or written on the back of the photograph. Add state and date in square brackets to the title if it is not mentioned in the caption

e.g. 245 10 ‡aFlat country north of Macdonnell Ranges taken from top of Emily Gap showing Emily Creek meandering in [Northern Territory, 1946 or 1947]‡h[picture] /‡cArthur Groom.

For photographs relating to Binna Burra and Noosa see the caption list. Some of the captions supplied by the donor for Binna Burra are too long for the title field. Put additional information in the 520 note field. (See 520 note below.) Add state and date in square brackets to the title if it is not mentioned in the caption.

e.g. 245 10 ‡aEntrance to Noosa National Park, rear view of rock pylons and entrance sign [Queensland, ca. 1950]‡h[picture] /‡cArthur Groom.

$h default for GMD: [picture]

$c default for statement of responsibility: Arthur Groom. Donor advises that all photographs were taken by Arthur Groom so no need for square brackets.

Save the heading with the following settings:

260 Publication details

As the photos are original works and not the published item, only the $c is used. Year followed by full stop. If the year is approximate express it as:

For other variations on dates see AACR2 Rule 1.4F7

300 Physical description

Use default for $a and $b. For dimensions measure the photographs in cm. to the nearest mm. Dimensions are always expressed as height x width.

$a1 photograph :$bgelatin silver ;$c15 x 11 cm.
$a1 photograph :$bgelatin silver, sepia toned ;$c15 x 11 cm.

500 Title note

Use default.

500 Condition note

Talk to a conservator re standard agreed terms. e.g. good, some fading, tear upper right corner, some foxing etc.

520 Summary note

See list for Binna Burra and Noosa at:

NOTE: Photographs in the albums are not in the same order as they are in the list supplied by the donor. See the back of the photographs for the number that corresponds to the number on the list. e.g. Binna Burra, BB10 on the list is PIC/5879/21 in the album.

Cut and paste the descriptive information that is not appropriate for the 245 title field into the 520 summary note field. This applies mainly to the Binna Burra photographs. Enclose this information in single inverted commas followed by Donor's name or names. e.g. for photograph Binna Burra BB 5 in the list, the title would read:

245 1 0 $aWhite Caves, Lamington National Park, [Queensland]$h[picture] /$cArthur Groom.

and the 520 field would read:

520 $a'Formed by wind erosion of rock made from volcanic ash, these caves are of geological interest. In a controversial decision, the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service closed access to them in the late 1990s.'--Donor.

If the 520 field is not required, delete it from the record.

773 Linking field

The link to the collection record will be set as a default in the template. When a record is created by copying from the template the 773 field is not transferred therefore you have to insert a 773 field. Note the subfields, 'i', 't' and 'w'. The first subfield always defaults to 'a' so you have to make sure you replace it with 'i'.

Verification Levels of Headings

Only two verification levels should be used in completed headings: 'Completed' and 'Completed – review centre standard' (Kinetica's User's guide to authority work). All headings created at NLA should be 'Completed' unless a large amount of authority work has been done on a heading in which case it can be 'Completed – review centre standard'. Apparent duplicate headings on Kinetica are often the result of different verification levels being used. When selecting headings from the Kinetica index, cataloguers should select headings with verification level 'Completed' if there is a choice.

Headings : Language of access point

This should always be 'Not specified' whether it is a name heading, a title heading or a series heading. The default on the name heading screen is 'English' and this should always be changed to 'Not Specified'.

Headings : Language of indexing

This should always be 'English' even if you are cataloguing a foreign language item. The default on the title heading screen is 'Not specified' and this should always be changed to 'English'.

Arthur Groom Collection Captions

Photographs

1. Central Australia 1946 and 1947

All photos and captions by Arthur Groom

Photographs for book I saw a strange land.

16 photographs. Includes portraits of Aboriginal hunters, Albert Namitjira at work, a view of Alice Springs from nearby mountain top.

2 NT and WA 1952
All photos and captions by Arthur Groom

Photographs for book published as Wealth in the Wilderness (working title was This is our country). 1952.

Approximately 83 black and white photographic prints, nearly all captioned, taken on a trip in the Northern Territory and Western Australia, during which Arthur Groom visited a number of cattle stations in 1951 or 2 while researching his book This is our country. The book was later published as Wealth in the wilderness, a title selected by the publisher against the author's wishes – he thought 'wealth' was misleading.

Stations photographed included: Daly River station, Lake Nash station, Aghadaghada Station, Marion Downs, Go Go Station, Monkira Station, Napperby Station, Flora Valley Station, Central Mount Wedge Station, McDonald Downs, Mallapunyah Springs Station.

Other places photographed included: Barkly Tableland, Kimberley, Victoria River and Timber Creek, Ord River Research Station, Daly River, Katherine, the Channel country, Darwin.

Topics include working with cattle, truck transport of cattle (which was then beginning to replace droving), homesteads, Aboriginal activities – both traditional hunting and work such as wolfram mining and station work. The hunting photographs were posed.

Cataloguing treatment

Cataloguing Guidelines and four individual templates were developed by the Special Materials Cataloguing Unit and used by the Project Team to catalogue onto the National Database. Titles were devised based on captions provided by the photographer or from a list of captions provided by the donor. A physical description and specific condition notes were devised based on advice and documentation from Preservation staff. Summary notes were also added to the records. Geographic headings, topical headings and subject headings for personal name plus class of person were used. Two publications by the photographer were also used to source information pertaining to the images in this collection. Key link fields were created in each record to link the individual catalogue record to the individual image file and the collection record.
