In keeping with guidelines recommended by ACLIS (Copyright Bulletin No. 8, March 1996), the Document Supply Service requests its clients to provide copyright declaration statements on all interlibrary loan requests for copies sent to the National Library of Australia.
We draw your attention particularly to two services outlined in that document. The Copyright Fee Paid Service enables the Document Supply Service to supply copies which cannot be supplied under the fair dealing and library provisions of the Copyright Act. The purpose for which the copy is required is not relevant.
Copying of Out-of-Print Materials and of more than a reasonable portion of a work is allowed, if a new copy cannot be obtained within a reasonable time at an ordinary commercial price. The Document Supply Service will quote to copy entire works provided that the appropriate Copyright Declarations are included on requests. If you are unable to locate a lending copy of an out-of-print item, you might like to use this service.
(02) 6273 2719 is the one fax number for Document Supply Service for Fast Track, standard and SUPPLY 1 requests, as well as for general enquiries. If other National Library fax numbers are used, there will be a delay before the message is received in Document Supply Service. The e-mail address is docss@nla.gov.au.
Fast Track requests may be sent via fax, e-mail, Ilanet or ABN ILL subsystem. When sending Fast Track requests on the ABN ILL subsystem, remember to put FAST TRACK in the CANCEL ON field. Document Supply Services uses software which sorts the requests on this field, with these requests being printed first. If you put this message elsewhere on the request, there is a possibility that we may miss it.
Document Supply Service lends material for 10 weeks with no extensions. We would appreciate it if libraries would endeavour to return books within the 10 weeks period. Lost books attract a charge of $75.00.
The National Library has cancelled its subscription to the ADONIS service. Holdings statements on ABN have been amended accordingly. Alternative sources for these journals are other Australian libraries or our SUPPLY 1 service.
In January this year the National Library launched Ariel for Windows 2.0. This system enables libraries to scan articles and photographs and transmit the resulting electronic image over the Internet to other Ariel workstations anywhere in the world. Ariel is faster, more reliable and less expensive than fax. Information can be found at the World Wide Web address http://www.abn.nla.gov.au/ariel, or the Library's Help Desk on 1800 026 155.
The ASTINFO Document Delivery Project was sponsored by Unesco. Launched in 1989, the project enabled the National Library to coordinate the delivery of more than 8,000 photocopied documents to over 40 science and technology information organisations in developing countries. The objectives of the project were to supply inexpensive documents to member countries, educate organisations in the document supply process and provide targeted training in national and international document delivery processes. The project ceased on 30 December 1996.
