CALL NUMBERS AT ANL - 2/94

We often have users of our service contacting us to query the call numbers of items in our collections. These queries most frequently have to do with the prefixes which are added to our call numbers. These prefixes are extremely important in directing your request to the appropriate stack area. This is because we have a very complicated stack arrangement, based not only on whether material is a monograph or a serial, but also on its age, size, language, and whether it is Australian or overseas in origin. Failure to include these prefixes on your call number can add extra time to the processing of your request.

Generally these prefixes are followed by either a dewey number or a running number designating its position in a pool. Another frequent variation relates to size eg Q (quarto). We will always try to lend you an item which you have requested on loan: if it is not available we will look for another version or edition of the title to send you; this may sometimes be in a non-book format. We do reserve the right not to lend an item because of its age, rarity or condition.

The following list seeks to identify our most commonly used prefixes and also to give you some information about the items, for example, whether the material is usually available for loan or not. It is certainly not a comprehensive list; our current Stack Directory runs to 46 pages! Call number prefixes may also occur in any combination of those mentioned below eg Np (an Australian pamphlet with no lending copy available), OJS (Japanese serial; not for loan but photocopies of articles provided).
