Read all about it!
This display of digital reproductions celebrates the raw and evocative images of people, places and events available online through Australian Newspapers: Historic Australian Newspapers, 1803 to 1954. In 2007 the National Library of Australia, in collaboration with Australian state and territory libraries, began the project to digitise out-of-copyright newspapers. Online volunteers have made a remarkable contribution, helping to make the newspapers searchable by correcting millions of lines of text generated by Optical Character Recognition software. Over 10 million articles are now available online, including the first 100 years of The Sydney Morning Herald. There will be 40 million articles available by 2011. From The Sydney Gazette to the Camperdown Chronicle, Australias historic newspapers are a window on both everyday life and dramatic life-changing moments.
