From 1997–2009 south-eastern Australia experienced the longest and most severe drought on record. In June 2016, heavy rainfalls drenched eastern Australia causing Lake George to fill for the first time since 2001. Are these extreme events just a normal part of natural climate variability or are we witnessing significant changes due to global warming? Australian Research Council fellow and science writer Dr Joelle Gergis presents highlights of our climate history since 1788 and delves into how our erratic climate has shaped Australian society.
