The Fortunes of Henry Handel Richardson

Some of the papers for this seminar soon will appear at the National Library of Australia's Online Seminars.

Henry Handel Richardson, the author of the great novels The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, The Getting of Wisdom, and Maurice Guest, died fifty years ago. Some of her papers, held in the National Library of Australia, Have been closed to scholars over these years, and are now available for study. Her novels, too, will be released from Australian copyright in 1997, and should become more widely available to readers.

This seminar celebrated Henry Handel Richardson's achievements as a writer, and the renewed interest in her work with the release of this material. All Richardson enthusiasts were invited to come to the seminar to learn about the materials in the National Library and to discuss Richardson's continuing place in Australian literature.

Over lunch seminar delegates were treated to the launch of the University of Queensland Press Australian Authors edition of The Getting of Wisdom edited by Susan Lever and Catherine Pratt.
