The tragic side of modernisation is focused on the heroine, Ayako (Yamada), who sacrifices all for her family she becomes the mistress of her boss, Mr. Asai (Shiganoya) only to be rejected by them. The film is a combination of traditional melodrama and contemporary social commentary. The 'elegy' is a lament on the contradictions in the heroine's position in a society in which the traditional family is disintegrating under the strains implied by the modernisation of the economy.
