Charlie (Wright) hopes that the arrival of her uncle and namesake (Cotten) will mean a change in the sleepy routine of her small town. She is soon to discover that he is a serial killer  known as the “Merry Widow Murderer” and is on the run from the police. Not wanting to break her mother's heart she tries to get him to leave town but he is willing to kill her  in order to protect his secret. This was Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite film.
