In 18th century Bulgaria four thugs break into the home of the poor shepherd Karaivan, where they rape and kill his wife, in front of both him and his young daughter Maria. Devastated, Karaivan burns down his old house and moves to a rough hut high in the hills, where he dresses Maria as a boy and trains her to fight from this point on, her entire life will be given over to exacting revenge. But as a young woman, she falls in love with another young shepherd, and no longer shares her father's obsession. This movie is generally regarded as the classic of Bulgarian cinema.
