Harold White Fellow Presentation - Nancy Keesing and the Naked Book - Dr Lyn Gallacher
Nancy Keesing and the Naked Book
Dr Lyn Gallacher
Writer and poet Nancy Keesing was a key agent in changing Australia’s literary landscape through her involvement with the Australian Society of Authors and as Chair of the Literature Board of the Australia Council. She is equally known for her collaboration with Douglas Stewart on the classic Australian Bush Ballads.
This presentation explores one of the delights of Keesing’s archive: her exchange of letters between 1966 and 1974 with writer David Martin. The correspondence shows Keesing’s version of ‘national identity’ expanding during a critical period in the growth of Australian cultural awareness. Martin’s European Jewish migrant background complicates Keesing’s thinking, leading her to ask what is the naked book?
Dr Lyn Gallacher is a Feature Producer for ABC Radio. She is currently creating new works for broadcast and publication based on the Library’s Papers of Nancy Keesing.
