The category and overall winner of the1992 TDK Australian
Audio Book Awards are as follows:
Categories
- The Dream by Rae Harris
& Beryl Harp; narrated by Robert van Mackelenberg
Produced by Narkaling Productions.
The producer, Narkaling Productions is based in Perth. Their
service is designed to meet the needs of people whose lack of reading skills
prevents them from having access to books. The books are recorded with speed
levels varying from 40 words per minute to 130 words per minute; usual
narration speeds are closer to 170 words per minute or more. The tapes come in
a kit with the printed text. The primary target group is people with
developmental disabilities, but many users come from: adult literacy students;
English language students; people with hearing impairment; migrants; people
with dyslexia; people with head injuries or who have had strokes, etc. The kits
are sold to public libraries, TAFE colleges, schools, Universities. 150 titles
are currently available and they are about to launch 30 more.
The narrator, Robert van Mackelenberg is an actor. He has
appeared in all major Australian theatre companies, and is currently working
with the State Theatre Company of WA. He was the winner of the Silver Swan
Award for best actor in WA in 1977.
- Patrick White: A Life by
David Marr; narrated by James Condon.
Produced by Louis Braille Productions.
The producer, Louis Braille Productions, Braille and Talking Book
Library are based in Melbourne. They have over 3 000 borrowers. Patrick
White: A Life is restricted for use by people with a print handicap,
however Louis Braille Productions are producing more titles that are
unrestricted. Currently they have 23 commercial titles.
The narrator, James Condon is a professional actor, and has
appeared in many Australian productions.

The Narrator, Margaret McClure Ford was awarded an MBE for services to
the Arts. She has been an actor since arriving in Australia from South Africa
in 1947.
