In the Library’s recent online survey, Casablanca was voted the most popular film, reflecting its status as a film classic.Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a cynical nightclub owner in Casablanca discovers that his ex-lover, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), who abandoned him years before, has arrived in Casablanca with her husband, Resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). Rick is forced to abandon his cynicism and decide which side he will be on. This film is a love story, it is a buddy movie, it is a war-time propaganda film and it is a triumph of the Hollywood studio system. So round up the usual suspects and join us for the classic film experience.

Science and Society: Exploring the Role of Research in Australian Lives to be delivered by Professor Brian Schmidt AC

Join Nobel Prize recipient Professor Brian Schmidt AC as he discusses how science permeates Australian lives, whether through a metaphysical contemplation of our place in the universe, or as we surf the internet using Wi-Fi. In this lecture, Professor Schmidt will explore the relevance of science to our daily lives, suggest ways that Australia could be getting more out of science, and ponder what science might bring us in the coming decades.The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Foyer.

The Kenneth Myer Lecture is supported by The Kenneth Baillieu Myer Trust.
