Lionel
Lindsay started his working life at the age of 15 at
the
Melbourne Observatory as a pupil-assistant. Employed there
from 1889 to 1892, he left to become a freelance artist
and journalist and contributed black-and-white drawings
to the Sydney Bulletin and other magazines. By
1927 the basis of his reputation was established and
he had become
widely known for his watercolours and etchings, and particularly
for his woodcuts of Australian animals and birds. This
bookplate,
which he created for his son Peter, is one of 148 in the
Library's Pictorial Collection.
