A BIRD IN THE HAND

A lively study of the marvellous Australian birdlife quickly emerged in the colonies, though scientific activity was centred in London and Europe. This colonial field work could not compete with the technological resources of the metropolis, and for many years research notes were referred to London for taxonomic validation.

On the other hand, colonial enthusiasts had the insuperable advantage of living and working in a bushland whose birds were rapidly becoming familiar. Australian field sketches were the first to reflect a genuine understanding of posture, movement and behaviour.

The magnificent bird books of John Gould established a tradition of ornithological and artistic excellence, a secure sense that Australian birds belonged in fine books, and a continuing ambition amongst artists to emulate Gould’s achievement. The works of Gregory Macalister Mathews testify to that ambition.
