Chisholm was a newspaperman who began his career on the Maryborough Herald and the Brisbane Daily Mail. His subsequent experience included editorship of the Melbourne Argus, the Australasian and the Sydney Sunday Pictorial. A keen naturalist—he gave his recreation as 'idling in green places'—he edited the Victorian Naturalist (19391948) and wrote several natural history books including Bird Wonders of Australia (1934) and Australian Wild Life (1966).
