Bandy Bunyips

This activity is linked to the National Profiles, level 1, The Arts.

Materials:

Earplugs (for the teacher)

  • Break class into groups. This exercise is funnier if groups are uneven
  • Tell class you are going to conduct your own private orchestra (if applicable, prior discussion can take place on the role of a conductor and their link to an orchestra)
  • Discuss the different noises bunyips might make: growl, rumble, yap, squeak, squark, yowl, cough, etc.
  • Give each group a noise from the collection the class decides
  • Have each group practice in turn (LOUDLY)
  • Have each group sit slightly apart from each other to minimise confusion
  • Point to each group to make them practise their noise, have a signal arranged for stop (other wise this game can get very messy)
  • Conduct like an orchestra, bringing volume up and down and combining sounds
  • This exercise can be performed alone, or with music in the background to add another element

A humorous note can be added by secretly choosing a student (a very confident and outgoing one) to jump up alone when pointed to and shout out a silly phrase, such as;

I can’t see any bunyip!
What was that?
Over HERE!!
For some reason this breaks the rest of the class up

Music

A student

  • Creates and makes music by using imagination and experience from play
