Wallace and Grommit video
Coloured plasticine
Video camera
Tripod
Small toys
Music for mini film
Watch Wallace and Grommit video. Many will already be familiar with Wallace and Grommit, but have them look at this video critically and see if they can work out how it might have been done. These characters arent cartoons, or computer animations. How were they made?
They were actually made using single frame photography where each figure is moved FRACTIONALLY, a single photograph is taken then the figure is moved again FRACTIONALLY. When the film is spliced together and run at film speed, the characters appear to be moving fluidly.
Guide the class to this conclusion. Brainstorm all the problems associated with this type of film-making: moving the figure too much, knocking the figure over, forgetting what you did yesterday, shaking the camera.
Using a video camera and tripod, have students film a short animated segment.
