Aboriginal Bunyips

A look at the original bunyip

This activity links to the National Profiles, Level 3, English.

Bunyips were originally an Aboriginal legend told to white Australians. They are known by many names in many different Aboriginal languages. Try and find as many different names for bunyips as possible. Locate the Aboriginal language it appears in and physical location. Write these on a map of Australia.

Read the six Indigenous stories in the exhibition. Act the story out using students in all the roles. (do play version)

Contact your local Aboriginal People (your local library or Council is a good place to start). Contact a spokesperson and invite them to come and speak to the class. Caution, some traditional Indigenous people will not want to speak of bunyips, please be sensitive to cultural differences.
