Frensham
"The closest I came to a personal book was
in the Frensham book of 100 pictures of a girls school at Mittagong,
N.S.W."
Harold Cazneaux, letter to Jack Cato, 6 March
1951
NLA MS 5416
In 1934, Cazneaux was
commissioned to take a series of photographs for a book depicting life at
Frensham, a unique girls boarding school in Mittagong. Cazneaux,
accompanied by Winnie, made several trips to the school. Welcomed by the staff
and with no photographic restrictions, Cazneauz rejoiced in the freedom. The
resulting photographs have a rare subtlety that capture the mood of this
cloistered rural school. "The closest I ever came to a personal book"
was how he later described the project.
