Samuel Thomas Gill, artist and lithographer, was born in Devon (England), migrating to Adelaide in 1839. Initially he painted portraits of wealthy settlers and their families, but later produced his more celebrated and interesting work observing everyday bush and town scenes and particularly, from 1851, documenting the Victorian goldfields. In 1846 he served as draftsman in the Horrocks expedition to Spencer Gulf.
