In the 1960s folk companies from Europe toured Australia, alongside companies from Asia and Africa. These tours were the catalyst for the formation of local folk companies like Dance Concert and Kolobok Australia. Later, individual dance artists from multicultural backgrounds began to establish professional companies both to showcase their heritage and to make works that fused the cultures of their old and new homelands. Multicultural and social dance forms have always been popular participatory, and sometimes competitive, forms of dance in Australia and continue to be so into the twenty first century. Indigenous dance has also become one the diverse strands of popular Australian culture. |
