Robert Helpmann was an artist drawn to the large metropolitan centres of the world who always marked his identity with large flourishes. Like many Australian dancers he felt he needed to be successful overseas before he could be accepted in Australia. His early successes as a dancer and an actor were in the United Kingdom.
